Reaction Of The People's Advocate On The Detained Protesters

Reaction of the People's Advocate on the detained protesters

The Ombudsman has been working continuously since the first day of the detentions to monitor the rights of detained or arrested protesters.

On the first day, the institution administered and verified the relevant documentation of detentions and escorts.

On Thursday, the Ombudsman personally contacted the arrested persons, while our teams were present at police stations 1, 2, 3 and 4 of Tirana as well as at the Trauma Hospital, where the detained and injured persons were interviewed and the necessary information was administered.

On Friday, the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture conducted verifications at the Security Block in Tirana, where the detained protesters were interviewed.

So far, 10 official complaints have been administered for excessive force during detention or escort by police officers. These complaints are in the process of administrative verification and, if confirmed, will be pursued with all legal means recognized by our mandate.

From the interviews conducted until Friday, none of the detained persons has filed a complaint for the use of violence while in the Security Block.

This Saturday, following an allegation of the use of violence against a citizen within the premises of the security block, the Ombudsman immediately engaged two teams: one team will interview the citizen in the hospital, while another team will conduct verifications in the Security Block.

The Ombudsman will make public the full findings upon completion of the verifications.
