The Ombudsman, after receiving information from the media regarding the arrest of lawyer Ulian Barjami in Elbasan, referred to the importance of respecting the rights and obligations of all actors in the courtroom, reacts as follows:

The institution draws attention to the fact that in every courtroom, all actors – lawyers, prosecutors and judges – have the same rights and obligations. Lawyers and prosecutors must be treated with equal guarantees and act with care, ethics and professionalism. Any measure that violates this balance endangers the trust in justice and legal certainty of the parties.

The Ombudsman has initiated procedures to review the case, to identify recurring problems and to contribute to the improvement of administrative and judicial practices.

At the same time, it is requested that independent judicial bodies conduct a full and impartial investigation into any violation of procedural guarantees for the exercise of the profession.
