Ombudsman Meets With Swiss Ambassador: Protecting The Right To Protest; Recommendations Issued To The Police Regarding The Use Of Force
The Ombudsman, Endrit Shabani, received the Swiss Ambassador, Siri Walt, at his office today.
After wishing her success in her role, Mr. Shabani briefed the Ambassador on the institution's challenges—ranging from the priority of fully digitizing its processes to efforts aimed at increasing the implementation of the Ombudsman’s recommendations.
In this context, Mr. Shabani proposed that Switzerland—a significant donor in Albania—consider the implementation of the Ombudsman’s recommendations as a criterion when deciding whether to fund projects for municipalities or government institutions.
Mr. Shabani and Ms. Walt also discussed recent protests in the country. The Ombudsman assured the Ambassador that his institution remains committed to upholding the right to peaceful protest, while simultaneously ensuring the rule of law and the protection of private property.
Furthermore, the Ombudsman informed the Ambassador about the institution's work in drafting specific recommendations regarding the use of force by the police during public gatherings, including the establishment of clear standards for the use of tear gas and rubber bullets. Switzerland remains an important partner for Albania—and for the Ombudsman in particular—in strengthening the institution’s mandate as a defender of human rights.
